The department of mass communication,  Lagos State University of Science and Technology, joined the  United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in celebration of e 12th edition of world Radio day earlier this week.

Tagged ‘Radio and Peace’  the annual celebration is usually held on the 13th of February.

The celebration saw members of the association rally around the school premises with handbills distributed to passers-by.

Speaking on the celebration,  Mrs. Olubunmi Dipo-Adedoyin, a senior lecturer and acting station manager of lasusteth 101.9fm revealed the need to celebrate World Radio Day, stressing that it is a global event.

“The celebration is global, as media practitioners, it is expedient for us to follow the trend as, radio is a grass root  media, affordable and cuts it across all ethnic groups.” She said.

She further said “peace is relative, as people might lack emotional, and political peace. There is a need for all to preach peace to all assunders, the celebration postulates that we promote peace in our everyday life, and environment, and going into the election year, let's embrace peace”.

Radio is a powerful medium for celebrating humanity in all its diversity and constitutes a platform for democratic discourse. At the global level, radio remains the most widely consumed medium. This unique ability to reach out to the widest audience means radio can shape a society’s experience of diversity, and stand as an arena for all voices to speak out, be represented, and be heard. Radio stations should serve diverse communities, offering a wide variety of programs, viewpoints, and content, and reflect the diversity of audiences in their organizations and operations.

Another senior lecturer, Mr. Hassan Nurudeen, emphasized the importance of the celebration, stressing that It is a global celebration organized by UNESCO.

Meanwhile, MACSA President, Olatunde Olamilekan, described radio as a powerful tool that aids communication and also fosters peace.

“Radio is a powerful tool for communicating and promoting peace, it is not a means of communication as it has the flexibility of being listened to anywhere”. He said.
