A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots. For this reason, year one students in the department of Mass Communication, Lagos State polytechnic recently organized a Yoruba day event which was used to display the various norms and values of the Yoruba culture.

It was indeed a sight to behold as the students came out in various groups clad in traditional attires to display dance steps, food, traditional marriage rites and even music performance.

There were groups like; Ekun Iyawo,  Obitun, Orisa Ibeji, just to mention a few. Students who are not natives of Yorubaland were however not left out of this huge event as they participated in the various groups having had series of rehearsal sessions.

The event which was organized for the students to display what they had learnt in the Yoruba Language Class during the Semester was used as the Continuous Assesment show and groups were graded by a panel of judges according to their performances.  The Eyo dancers emerged as the best group as a result of their distinctive and energetic display. Followed by the Obitun and Orisa ibeji groups respectively.

Of notable mention in the Panel of Judges were, Mr Daisi, the Dean, School of communication and Liberal Studies; Mr Ibrahim Nurudeen, Instructor, Performing and Media Arts Class, CESA; Mr Gbenga Akanmu, Mr David Adenuga, Mr Ade Inasa-Thomas. Just to mention a few.

This programme would not have come at a better time as exams are just few days away. Perhaps, the best way to end a long and interesting semester.
