The Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) has launched a digital skills initiative aimed at equipping traders and artisans in Ikorodu with tools to improve their businesses.

The programme, titled Digital Literacy for Ikorodu Trade (DLIT), is part of the university’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts and targets participants from Lambo Lasunwon, Araromi, and Okegbegun communities in Ikorodu Local Government Area. Twenty participants were selected following a screening process.

The four-week training, which commenced on April 11, 2026, and is scheduled to end on May 2, 2026, is being held at the NITDA Digital Learning Centre on the Ikorodu campus. The facility was facilitated by Oluremi Tinubu. Participants are receiving practical training in brand development, digital marketing, search engine optimisation, artificial intelligence applications, and basic graphic design.

Delivering a keynote address titled “Fulfilling the Mandate of Community Service through Digital Entrepreneurship,” the Vice Chancellor, Olumuyiwa Odusanya, described the initiative as timely. He said the shift from analogue to digital business methods has made digital literacy necessary for business growth, noting that modern communication and transactions increasingly rely on digital tools, including online platforms and cryptocurrencies.

Odusanya explained that digital literacy involves the effective use of devices such as computers and mobile phones to communicate, create content, and access broader markets. He stated that the programme is designed to enhance business efficiency, reduce unemployment, and support community development.

He added that the initiative aligns with the university’s IMPACT vision, particularly its focus on strengthening town and gown relationships by extending institutional expertise to host communities. The Vice Chancellor also acknowledged the donation of the Digital Learning Centre and commended the programme’s organisers, including the team lead, Steven Anu' Adesemoye, and the lead trainer, Stephen Aderibigbe.

The Dean of Students’ Affairs, Ademola Aderogba, said the university remains committed to sustaining mutually beneficial relationships with its host communities through CSR initiatives.

Aderibigbe noted that outstanding participants would receive follow-up support after the programme, adding that universities have responsibilities beyond teaching and research, including community service.

One of the participants, Omotolani Abigail, expressed appreciation for the initiative, stating that the training would help improve her business by strengthening its digital presence.
