The Relevance of Internship for University Students

By Anifowose Omodolapo

In today’s competitive job  market, a degree alone may not be enough to secure a desirable job. Employers are looking for candidates who offer more than just academic knowledge. Internship serves as a stepping stone, helping undergraduate students gain practical experience and stand out in an increasingly competitive market. This article explores the multifaceted benefits of internship, from gaining practical knowledge to building networks and developing key skills.

GAINING PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE

Universities equip students with foundational knowledge, but the real world requires more than theory. Internship provides a way to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings. It offers students a chance to experience firsthand what they learnt in the classroom. In essence, internship makes education tangible.

NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES

Internships allows students to build relationship with industry professionals, which can lead to mentorship, job recommendations, and more. While not always the most obvious benefit, networking during an internship can prove to be one of the most valuable outcomes.

PROFESSIONALISM

Internships teaches students workplace etiquette, professional behavior, and how to navigate corporate settings. Through hands-on experience, students develop the skills needed to handle real challenges and responsibilities in a professional environment.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT

Interns gain essential skills like communication, teamwork, time management, and working under pressure—skills that cannot be fully taught in a classroom. Internships helps prepare students for the realities of the working world by developing these abilities in advance.

INCREASED EMPLOYABILITY

According to recent surveys, over 70% of companies prefer candidates with relevant internship experience when selecting new hires. Employers believe that candidates with internship experience have a clearer understanding of the job, making them more attractive than entry-level candidates with no practical experience. Graduates without internship experience often struggle to find employment because they lack hands-on exposure. Thus, including internship experience on a résumé makes students more appealing to potential employers.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT

For many students, internship broadens their career horizons, allowing them to explore different career paths and discover their own passions and interests. It provides a new perspective, helping students refine their career choices and pursue paths that resonate with them.

CONCLUSION

Internships plays a crucial role in preparing university students for the professional world. By offering practical knowledge, skill development, and networking opportunities.  It also help students transition smoothly from education to employment.

In today’s competitive job market, students with internship experience are better positioned for job opportunities than those without.

To maximize these benefits, the government should consider making internship a compulsory part of the university curriculum. Industry leaders should also collaborate with universities to ensure that internships are both accessible and educational, ensuring that students are not only well-educated but also well-prepared for their professional future.
