Comrade Alimi Olalekan, National Chairman, National Association of Nigerian Student Joint Campus Committee (Lagos Chapter), has raised concern over the rising cost of rent and electricity tariffs in student-dominated areas around Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu.

Addressing residents of Lambo Lasunwon at the official commissioning of the community Road, facilitated by Rep. Babajimi Benson, Chairman House Committee on Defence representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency. Comrade Alimi expressed gratitude for the newly constructed road but emphasized the need for further support in tackling issues related to housing and electricity costs that affect students.

He noted that while the road improvement is appreciated, it has inadvertently caused a housing shortage, pushing rent prices beyond the reach of many students.

“We are thankful for the new road, but we need help engaging the government and landlords to address the impact this development is having on housing availability and affordability. We don’t want students to be ‘exported’ out of the area because rent is becoming too expensive,” he said.

Alimi also condemned what he called the exploitation of students by some landlords, urging them to resist the temptation to hike rents unjustifiably. He acknowledged that it was the house of representative member, Honourable Babajimi Benson, who facilitated the road repairs, and not the landlords, and emphasized that students should not be burdened with exorbitant costs.

The NANS JCC chairman also called for relief from the high electricity tariffs imposed on students living in the area, stating that despite being in Band A, which provides more stable electricity, the cost is unsustainable for many. He urged the National Assembly to consider legislation that would introduce vouchers or special rates for students to ease the burden.

“The tariff for electricity is just too high for students. We love being in Band A because of the improved power supply, but it is becoming unaffordable. We’re appealing to the National Assembly to pass a bill that favors students and helps manage these costs,” Alimi added.

In response, Honourable Babajimi Benson acknowledged the students’ concerns and outlined ongoing efforts to alleviate their challenges. He revealed that plans are underway to equip host universities, including LASUSTECH, with solar-powered mini-grids to provide 24/7 electricity at a fraction of the current cost. He assured the students that while they would still pay for the electricity, the rate would be reduced by two-thirds of what they are currently paying.

“What we are working on is beyond Band A or B. We’re focusing on providing reliable solar energy to campuses at significantly lower rates. I will also discuss with the Lagos electricity distribution company (DISCO) and engage landlords on the need to reduce rent in student areas. We are pushing for more affordable housing,” Benson stated.

In an interview following the event, Comrade Alimi lauded Honourable Benson’s leadership and commitment to the welfare of students, praising his efforts to improve living conditions in Ikorodu.

“The leadership of Honourable Babajimi Benson is something to emulate. He is done so much for Ikorodu, and we appreciate his continuous support for students. We pray for his continued success,” Alimi concluded.

As Ikorodu continues to develop, students hope that the dividends of democracy will extend to more affordable living conditions, allowing them to focus on their education without the burden of high costs.
