LASUSTECH Conducts Second Mock Accreditation for Key Programmes in CASS

By Our Reporters

Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) commenced its second mock accreditation exercise, evaluating four undergraduate programmes under the College of Applied Social Sciences (CASS).

The programs reviewed include B.Sc. Mass Communication, B.Sc. Actuarial Science, B.Sc. Marketing, and B.Sc. Banking and Finance. This exercise highlights the institution's commitment to meeting accreditation standards and ensuring a high quality of education.

The mock accreditation process, led by internal and external experts, involved thorough evaluations, interviews with department heads, and on-site inspections. The goal was to ensure that LASUSTECH's academic offerings meet the required standards to maintain both national and international recognition.

Professor Olumuyiwa Olamade, Dean of CASS, highlighted the importance of accreditation in Nigerian universities. He stressed that accreditation ensures the standardization of education across institutions.

Heads of Departments (HoDs) confidently presented their levels of preparedness. Associate Professor Abiola Lawal, HoD of Banking and Finance, reported that the department is 98% ready for accreditation.

"Our facilities are well-equipped, documentation is in order, and our workforce is committed to meeting accreditation criteria," he remarked.

He credited the university's preparedness to its 40-year legacy, the state government's support, and the leadership of the Vice Chancellor.

Associate Professor Adeola Banjo, Pioneer Dean of CASS and HoD of Actuarial Science, emphasized the importance of accreditation in ensuring the standardization of education across Nigerian universities.

She noted that accreditation involves the assessment of teaching facilities, curriculum, and overall readiness. "It’s a vital process for the national and international recognition of the university," she explained.

Banjo also praised the university's leadership and the support from the state government, noting the Vice Chancellor’s relentless efforts. She further acknowledged Dr. Steven 'Anu Adesemoye, HoD of Mass Communication, for mentoring future journalists.

Associate Professor Waheed Alasiri, HoD of Marketing, expressed optimism about the department's preparedness. "We are fully equipped and have followed the accreditation checklist meticulously," he said.

His department, along with others, aims to meet all accreditation requirements and continue providing excellent education to students.

The accreditation process led by Professor Basira Oladipupo, LASUSTECH’s Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), the accreditation officials conducted inspections of key facilities, including classrooms, studios, and staff offices.

They praised the university for its preparedness but also identified areas that required improvement, such as upgrading office furniture and enhancing equipment like micro digital systems and sound facilities.

During their tour of the radio and TV studios, the officials were impressed by the vibrant color schemes and functionality but suggested aesthetic enhancements to improve the studio’s visual appeal.

The Photography Studio was noted for its commendable setup, and officials encouraged the department to explore income-generating initiatives by engaging students in photography services.

Professor Oladipupo underscored the importance of minor adjustments across all facilities and praised the Mass Communication Department for standing out in its readiness.

She explained the potential outcomes of the accreditation process, ranging from full accreditation to interim or failed accreditation, which could have significant implications for the institution’s programs.

She also highlighted the consequences of failing to secure accreditation, noting that students would be unable to graduate or participate in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program. "What is worth doing is worth doing well, because if you have failed, then you have to start all over," she cautioned.

The mock accreditation exercise highlighted LASUSTECH's readiness for full accreditation and also underscored the collaborative efforts of departments, staff, and administration in enhancing the quality of education.
