Lagos State Polytechnic’s Directorate of Students Affairs has finally released the Students Union Government’s election results yesterday, declaring Surakat Muftaudeen as the new President of the Union.

As contained in the result document signed by the Returning Officer, Isaac Adekoya, Surakat emerged as the winner of the Students Union Executive Presidential seat with a total vote of 1900, surpassing closest rival Adebayo Samuel Ayomide, who recorded a total vote of 1881 and Kudehinbu Patrick who recorded only ten votes.

Surakat will be assisted by Amoo Halimot who emerged as the Vice President I with 1668 votes and Eleduwe  Ali Cisse who secured the Vice President II seat with 1210 votes.

The results also saw the emergence of Imeh Godknow Thompson as the new General Secretary with 1662, defeating Ojikutu Mariam Oyindamola, who amassed a total of 1632 votes, while Ajani Nimotallah surpassed Omotosho Divine and Tanimowo-Oloko Daniel with 1412 votes to emerge as the Assistant General Secretary.

In the same vein, Akinniku Abdulateef emerged as the new Social Director, beating Akinsanya Olamide Wareez with a total vote of 1771 while Eshinlokun Muiz upset Garuba Ibraheem and Adefowoju Habeeb with 1626 votes to emerge as the Sports Director.

Other elected candidates include Arewa Rachel Ayomide who emerged as the Welfare Director (Ikorodu Campus), and her counterpart Agbaje Abdulwahab who defeated Ayo-Ariyo Stephen for Isolo campus Welfare Director.

On the contrary, Hassan Nurudeen Abiodun, Adjovi Victor Olamilekan, and Anifowose Aminat Ajoke emerged as unopposed winner for the Public Relations Officer, Financial Secretary, and Treasurer positions respectively.

Each candidate, however, recorded a total number of 1836, 1802, and 1707 votes respectively.

In the other arms of the Students Union Government, Oyewole Quadri Damilola emerged as the new Speaker of the Students Representative Council with 69 votes from the honorable members as against Bawallah Aliyu’s one vote.

The Students Representative Council’s election caused  stir among members of the house with Bawallah Aliyu’s faction boycotting the election despite getting postponed twice.

Following the readjustment of the election calendar, the SRC election was scheduled to hold on Wednesday, 16th of November, 2022 but met several fallout and disagreements which led to its postponement till Thursday, 17th of November, 2022.

The election, however, still failed to hold as drama and chaos unfolds in the house with the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Asekun Elijah declaring Bawallah as the winner without voting by the honorables- an action that led to a protest by Oyewole’s faction.

Both Speakership candidates were, at first, disqualified, but the intervention of LASUSTECH’S Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olumuyiwa Odusanya- following a protest at his office by the aggrieved honorable members, led to their reinstatement and the election was postponed again for the second time.

It was eventually conducted on the 18th of November, 2022, clashing with the general election as well as the Students Union Judiciary Council’s  election which saw Oyebade Isaac emerging as the new Chief Judge after winning the poll with eleven votes out of fourteen justices representing each faculty of the Polytechnic.

Meanwhile, with the transmutation of the Polytechnic into University, the newly elected SUG President and his cabinets will be the last Students Union Government for the Polytechnic as the University session is set to commence next year.
