Juvenile Delinquency

Favour Lokosu

Juvenile delinquency is a criminal act committed by a an underage person. Juvenile crimes  range from status offences such as underage smoking, drinking, property crimes, violent crimes, rape and many more, which are major problems in Nigeria today.‎

Juvenile crimes are heard by the juvenile courts which are actually rare in Nigeria.

Some of the following are popular causes of Juvenile Delinquency

1. Family factor: Family plays a huge role in the behavioural pattern of individuals. For example, parenting style; the level of parental supervision and the mode of discipline, affects the psychology of the child.

2. Peer group influence: the kind of friend one associates with also affects individuals to a large extent. Associating with friends who indulge in criminal activities may also make one do same.
3. Poverty: With the high rate of poverty, scartity of food, job, housing and other basic amenities, people have been left finicially incapable to foot their own bills and quite a number of these juveniles will rather resort to stealing, pickpocketing, armed robbery and other dangerous activities at very tender age.‎

4. Lack of Education: This is also one of the causes as lack of training educationally, morally, and in all aspect can lead to a high level of illiteracy which is eventually dangerous for the society.‎

5. State of mind: The young ones mind set needs to be renewed. The need for juveniles to be educated in a a lot of new and innovating skills and also against the usage of hard and harmful drugs cannot be overemphasised.
Juvenile delinquency which could lead to rejection, antisocial peer group, can be curbed‎ through the innovation, renewal and transformation of the mind of young people by putting in place proper structures like free education, provision of basic amenities and establishment of more juvenile courts.
