Industry Experts from different walks of
life has urged students of Lagos State Polytechnic to obtain practical skills
as this will serve as a means for them to be valuable in the 21st century. This
call was made during the just concluded leadership symposium organized by the
Students’ Union government held on Wednesday, 27th June 2018 at the 700 Seaters
Hall in Ikorodu campus of the institution with the theme “Learning mentorship;
skills you must acquire as any youth to excel in the 21st Century.
According to the former public relations
officer of the institution and a paper presenter at the symposium, Mr Steve
Adesemoye, emphasized that students need to start acquiring skills that will
blur the lines between the walls of the classroom and certification as their
Curricula cannot catch up with the present digital world.
“If the present trend of education which is
seemingly not up to standard for what the future holds continues this way and
institutions continue to churn out unemployable youths that lack skills, then
the future is not meant for Africa” he explained.
In his closing remark, he encouraged the
students to get equipped and skilled in several activities that will make them
employable. He also encouraged them to embrace state-of-the-art systems like
Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR) and Bio-Technology.
Also speaking at the programme was David Lanre Messan, a
graduate of Harvard Business School USA, a publicist, writer, speaker,
successful entrepreneur who is also an alumnus of Lagos State Polytechnic,
Ikorodu.
He charged the students to get empowered as
educational acquisition of knowledge should not be mistaken for been empowered,
in terms of leadership, mentorship, and been creative, as it is a different
ball game entirely.
The Business Administrator
recounted his experience to students about how he made his first million naira
at the age of 23, and how at 24 he had made up to 30million naira through
several business ideas he invested in emphasising that he was not from a well
to do home.
The symposium had in attendance students
from the different department of the institution who regarded the event in a
cross session of interview with the Press Club as relevant to their current
need and should be applauded.
