There Is Still Room For Appeal - CSO to Disqualified SUG Aspirants

Eke Van Victor

With several candidates of the forthcoming SUG elections disqualified by the screening committee last Thursday, just one week to the election, the question on everyone's lips has been; will the SUG presidential candidate be unopposed?

When contacted, Israel Olanloye, the presidential aspirant disqualified for security reasons said he was not ready to back out on the race he has begun. He absolved himself of any wrong accusations saying "I have never been involved in any domestic or physical violence in the polytechnic. Moreover, I have never been invited nor had any negative records with the security personnel on campus even during my ND days".

He however disclosed that series of letters have been sent to the DSA, CSO, PRO and Rector but that from his findings, the school management had reached a conclusion on his disqualification. He further reiterated that, there is no going back in his SUG race.

Another disqualified candidate Sikiru Azeez vying for the post of Social secretary from the Department of Mass Communication said that he also had written several letters to the DSA and security unit which after being forwarded to the management didn't yield any fruit.

Efforts to see the DSA however proved abortive. But the CSO who was available to speak with our correspondent said he is not in the position to disclose the reasons for their disqualification.

He further stated that irrespective of what the case may be, there is always room for appeal. "What they don't know is that, there is a difference between been disqualified for security reasons and been disqualified for security issues. Some of them may not necessarily have past records with us here but were screened out for security reasons." He said.‎
He cited an example of the present SUG president and how he was disqualified for security reasons days before the election that produced him as president. ‎

The CSO who emphasised that the screening committee had done a thorough background check on the candidates said even though there is room for appeal, if the school management insists on the disqualification of the candidates,  there is absolutely nothing the candidates can do about it because the management always has a reason.
