ASUU LASUSTECH Chapter Decries Illegal Dissolution of Governing Councils

By Adeyemi Oluwanifemi and Mcakinsajijo Faith The academic staff union of university (ASUU) Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) Chapter has reiterated the concern of the apex body of ASUU over what it called illegal dissolution of Governing Council in Federal and State University. The chairman of LASUSTECH Chapter, Comrade Tayo Okulaja, pointed out that the Governing Council are not only constituted by government nominees but other internally elected members of the institution. Okulaja said this in Ikorodu, Lagos at a press conference organized by LASUSTECH Chapter stressing that the union was not carried along before the dissolution of the councils which is against the constitution of the institution and eroding academic freedom of these schools. Accreditation: LASUSTECH Prepares for NUC Approval of 25 Programmes

The programmes include departments in the College of Applied and Social Sciences, College of Engineering, and College of Agriculture. The Vice Chancellor of the school, Professor Olumuyiwa Odusanya, disclosed this yesterday at the second congregation meeting of the school in Ikorodu, Lagos.  He said that preparations were in top gear to meet the requirements of the National University Commission (NUC), stressing that no stone would be left unturned in ensuring that all the programmes were finally accredited. In his remarks at the occasion, Professor Odusanya said, "The institution has started the construction of an 80-bed student hostel and a 1,500-seat auditorium at the Ikorodu campus of the school." LASUSTECH Elects New Governing Council Representatives and Senate Representatives

The Academic Staff elected included Mr. Akinrinola Akinfolabi for the teaching staff representative and Mrs. Olubiyi Olatokunbo emerged as the Non-Teaching Staff representative on the governing council.  Mr. Akinrinola polled 283 votes, to defeat his closest rival, Dr. Murisiku Onigemo with 206 votes, while Mrs. Olubiyi received 280 vote to defeat Dr. AbdulRakeem Ibrahim who polled 245 votes. LASUSTECH Shuts Down School Activities Due to NLC and TUC Nationwide Strike

By Habeeb Ibrahim and Hassan Bisiriyu The Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) has suspended all academic activities and closed its facilities due to the ongoing nationwide strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC). In a statement released by the LASUSTECH Student Consultative Assembly, Chairman/President Comr. David Gabriel informed students that "All classes and academic activities will be suspended until further notice. University facilities, including libraries and laboratories, will be closed. All student events and activities have been postponed." Gabriel urged students to remain calm and safe during the strike, saying "We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary."
