A NOTE TO ALL LASPOTIANS FROM THE STABLE OF LASPOTECH PRESS CLUB PRESIDENT

Image
My fellow LASPOTECH students, please let's be careful out there. A lot is happening, especially rape cases. Our school does not have hostels and we have no choice but to live off campus outside the protection of the institution. Rape cases have become rampant now and I urge us to be on high alert of our surroundings. Sad has it may be, the media has almost no power in cases like this especially when there's no evidence. Do you know?  That a student can be raped, and when the issue is reported to the school authorities it gets to the court. And at the court, two things happen. It's either the predator is punished or goes scot free(especially when there is no evidence). Issues like this drag for a long time. In the case where the predator eventually goes scort free, and the school press has already published it with the rapist face(s). He can sue us. That's the part that annoys me the most. Like for real.  Following series of events, most or almost all perpetrators are no...

However, the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-olu organized and sent a "visitation panel" to investigate the problems of the institution after listening to the pleas of the new Rector, Dr Oluremi Nurudeen Olaleye and his governing council. The "visitation panel" investigation started in October 2019 and submitted their reports to the governor February 2020 and the school has been waiting for the release of the "white paper" since then. The "white paper" which is the solution to the school's problem contains...

Image
Towards safer institutions in Nigeria free of rape and sexual violence, the SPOTLIGHT INITIATIVE in conjunction with WOMEN AT RISK INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION (WARIF) spread its campaign to LAGOS STATE POLYTECHNIC (LASPOTECH) Ikorodu campus.  The students were urged to always speak up and seek help. And that their mental health is paramount and should always come first when faced with situations of rape. WARIF explained to the students saying that consent is key and both genders should always avoid putting themselves in situations were they become vulnerable. One of the facilitators, Mr Adeyemi defined RAPE as "forceful penetration" on any gender. He said, "without consent, penetration into any part of a female or male's body be it the private part, mouth or anus is rape".  Following the extremely prevalent rate of sexual violence and harassment in institutions, WARIF thought it necessary to implement this program to break the culture of silence and also to ensure ...
