Actually, feminism is the advocacy of women's rights on the ground of equality of sexes. Oxford English Dictionary defines a feminist as an advocate or supporter of the rights and equality of women.

A Failed Nigeria Educational System

Image
BY AYOOLA OLAITAN What has become a serious source of worry to many Nigerians is the failed educational system. When the topic a failed educational system comes where do one start from or how do one respond to such statement? Is it the deteriorating system, where lecturers can’t justify what they are paid for or how students are taught what is not relevant in a real situation and are always bombarded with assignments that they are yet to be taught in class.   Or the absurd 6-3-3-4 system of education, whereas in other countries they are embracing the new form education where you can round up your higher education in two years or less instead of the unnecessary elongated four years minimum course of study.

KNOWING AND MAKING THE MOST OF THE FOI ACT AS A JOURNALIST

Image
By Adetunji Morenike, Abdulrasheed Baliqis and Vidal Emmanuel It is less than 24 hours to commemorate this year’s international world press freedom day and there’s no better time to talk about laws and Acts of parliament that has contributed to the ease of practicing journalism in Nigeria. The most recent of such law is the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) enacted and signed into law in 2012 by President Jonathan’s administration. Knowledge, as it is popularly said is power, and information can make or mar any individual or even a nation. This is why it is important for journalists and aspiring journalists to be in comprehension of the FOI Act. In a country whereby information seems impossible to retrieve from the 'powers-that-be', the freedom of information law gives the journalist and every single member of the public the right to request for information from federal bodies.

Image
Adesuyi Adeniyi In the mood of anticipating tomorrow’s celebration of the international freedom of the press day, it is pertinent for one to examine how the virtue of a free press has thrived in Nigeria both politically and in all spheres of our nationhood. With Nigeria returning to full democratic rule in 1999, the grass seemed greener on the horizon for the Nigerian press which had been submerged in repressive military administrations for over three decades. Fast forward nineteen years, Nigeria is today ranked 119th of 180 countries on the 2018 World Press Freedom index published by Reporters Without Borders (RWB), having gone up three places on the log from the previous year.
