The Head of the Mass Communication Department at Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Dr. Steven Anuoluwapo Adesemoye, has cautioned students against participating in informal thrift contributions, popularly known as ajo.

The warning was issued during a departmental meeting held on Wednesday to address key concerns affecting students.

Speaking to students, Dr. Adesemoye emphasized the potential risks associated with such financial arrangements, advising them to focus instead on prudent personal financial management.

The meeting, convened to clarify the department’s policies and address pressing issues, covered a wide range of topics, including harassment, classroom usage, and exam preparation.

Dr. Adesemoye urged students to follow proper channels when reporting complaints. "The proper line of communication is from Students/HOC to Level Adviser to HOD," he explained, adding that the department would not act on grievances unless they are formally reported.

He also reassured students of improved accessibility with the reshuffling of level advisers: Mr. Bidemi Balogun and Mrs. Olayinka Idowu for 300 Level, Dr. Okeowo and Mr. Adenuga for 200 Level, and Dr. Ijikelly alongside Miss Lasisi for 100 Level.

The HOD addressed concerns about various forms of misconduct, including aristos, drug abuse, cultism, bullying, and cyberbullying, promising continued efforts to manage these cases.

He also stressed the importance of dressing decently, reminding students that while the department does not enforce a uniform, all attire must be neat and presentable. To support indigent students, he announced plans to distribute shoes and footwear on December 20, 2024.

Dr. Adesemoye reiterated that classrooms are strictly for academic purposes and not for religious activities. "If any religious activities must take place, go to the chapel—either the Church or the Mosque," he said. Sporting activities, which had been suspended due to missing equipment, are expected to resume soon, he added.

The meeting concluded with a call for students to prepare thoroughly for their exams, tentatively scheduled for January.

This meeting underscored the department's commitment to fostering discipline, ensuring proper communication, and creating an environment conducive to academic success.
