Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) has launched a campaign in solidarity with the Lagos State Government's Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Day, slated for Monday, September 2, 2024.

Under the banner of #TurnLASUSTECHPurple, the university community is mobilizing to raise awareness and take a unified stand against sexual harassment and violence.

The campaign, led by the Department of Mass Communication in collaboration with the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, underscores the university's commitment to eradicating sexual violence from its community.

Dr. Steven Anu' Adesemoye, Head of the Department of Mass Communication, expressed the importance of the initiative, stating, "This campaign is not just about LASUSTECH; it is about addressing a pervasive issue affecting all tertiary institutions in Nigeria. We are amplifying the message of zero tolerance for sexual harassment and violence."

Throughout the campaign, which runs from August 30 to September 2, the LASUSTECH community will engage in activities designed to foster dialogue and awareness. Daily campaign materials, including impactful creatives and body copies, will be disseminated across various platforms, encouraging open discussions on the critical issues of consent, respect, and the support of survivors.

On Monday, September 2, students and staff are encouraged to wear purple or incorporate a touch of purple into their outfits. The color purple has been chosen to symbolize the courage to speak out against violence, the empowerment of survivors, and the unity of the LASUSTECH community in its stand against harassment.

The initiative aligns with the Lagos State Government's broader efforts to combat domestic and sexual violence, an issue that affects one in five students. Through this campaign, LASUSTECH aims to foster a culture of consent, respect, and support for survivors.

While there won't be any formal events on Monday, the message is clear: 'NO' means 'NO,' and it's never up for debate. The campaign's final message reinforces the importance of respecting boundaries and understanding that consent is key.
