Our Reporters

The Institute of Operational Research and Management Science of Nigeria (IORMS), in collaboration with the department of Mathematical Sciences and the department of Computer Science, Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), held a seminar and workshop training at the LASUSTECH campus.

The event took place at a 500-seater auditorium and witnessed the presence of esteemed personnel, including the Institution’s Public Relation Officer, Dr. Kuye, and Director of Student Affairs, Dr. Aderogba, among other lecturers.

The theme of the program was "Operational Research: Role, Methodology, Relationship With Other Disciplines, and Benefits," as stated by Dr. Adewoye during his speech. He emphasized that Operational Research (OR) is an interdisciplinary field that applies mathematical methods, statistics, and computer science to solve real-world problems.

Dr. Adewoye explained that OR goes by different names in various departments and fields. In the environmental domain, it is known as project management, while in finance, it is called financial engineering.

The essence of OR lies in improving systems by optimizing factors such as profits, costs, and overall effectiveness.

During the seminar, the attendees learned about the significance of OR in various industries, including transportation, healthcare, manufacturing, telecommunications, and more. OR models, such as linear programming, assignment model, markup model, and inventory model, were discussed as essential tools for decision-making and predicting outcomes.

Dr. Adewoye highlighted that OR is relevant to multiple disciplines, including mathematics, computer science, statistics, business administration, and engineering. The collaboration between these fields plays a crucial role in creating accurate mathematical models for solving complex problems.

The seminar also shed light on various operational research bodies, such as the Institution of Operational Research Society, Association of Europe Operation Research Society, and the African Operational Research Society, among others.

Participants were informed about the numerous opportunities in the field, such as collaboration between members, encouragement and support from working groups, job vacancies, certification programs, and academic networking for publications.

Dr. Adewoye shared his advice for success, emphasizing the importance of hard work, persistence, and trust in God. He encouraged students to dedicate their efforts wholeheartedly to their chosen path, as success may not come immediately but will be recognized with time and perseverance.

The primary objectives of the seminar were to raise awareness about operational research, establish a local group for OR enthusiasts, and inspire students and staff to become members and contribute to making positive changes in various systems.

During the seminar, an insightful goodwill message was delivered on behalf of Prof. Rasheed Kola Ojukutu, the President and Chairman of IORMS.

The guest speaker emphasized that Operational Research (OR) is an interdisciplinary science that encompasses every discipline, as long as the problem at hand involves multiple variables and is not one-directional.

“The IORMS welcomes everyone, irrespective of their academic background. Whether you are studying chemistry or physics, the essence of OR lies in tackling complex problems, many of which may not be inherently mathematical in nature. The institution categorizes its members as associate members, fellows, cooperative members, and offers various avenues to address Nigeria's challenges and provide solutions.

“Becoming an OR practitioner doesn't necessarily mean focusing solely on mathematics to solve problems; rather, the aspect of concentration may differ depending on one's field of expertise” He said.

During the event, mention was made of a prominent figure in the field of OR, Prof. Isefun, who became a professor in the United States in 1971. He is one of the legendary problem solvers for the USA, and his success story serves as an inspiration, especially for Nigerian OR practitioners.
Speaking on membership, he confirmed that the induction fee for students is 5,000 naira, while lecturers are charged 2,000 naira. He also said the institution is open to not only academic members but also business and corporate members, making it a diverse and inclusive platform for all stakeholders
In an interview with a computer science student named Solomon, it was evident that the institution plays a crucial role in fostering a thirst for knowledge among students.

He stated that students have the opportunity to learn more and gain deeper insights into the world of OR through the institution's support and educational programs.

A lecturer also shared thoughts on the program, emphasizing that it opens up numerous benefits for students. It provides exposure to international activities, not just within Nigeria but on a global scale, thus broadening students' horizons and opportunities.

The Seminar and Workshop proved to be a valuable platform for promoting the significance of Operational Research, bringing together experts from various disciplines to address complex challenges and seek innovative solutions for Nigeria and beyond.

Overall, the seminar and workshop proved to be enlightening and provided valuable knowledge on Operational Research, paving the way for progress and optimization in multiple sectors.
